Australia has taken the rare step of formally naming Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a state sponsor of terrorism after intelligence services concluded the regime’s terror arm orchestrated antisemitic arson attacks against Jewish targets in Sydney and Melbourne.
Canberra’s decision follows an assessment by ASIO that the IRGC used local proxies to torch Lewis’ Continental Kitchen, a kosher deli in Sydney, and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne in 2024, in an effort to “undermine and sow division” by striking at Australia’s Jewish community.
The government has already expelled Iran’s ambassador and suspended its embassy operations in Tehran over the same campaign.
Under a new “state sponsors of terrorism” framework added to Australia’s criminal code this year, the IRGC becomes the first entity ever listed.
The designation makes it a serious crime to recruit for, train with, fund, or otherwise support the IRGC, with penalties of up to 25 years in prison for those who continue to deal with Iran’s terror apparatus on Australian soil.
Australia’s move aligns it more closely with allies that have long treated the IRGC as a central node in Iran’s global terror network, arming and directing proxies such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
For Jewish Australians, the listing is a concrete answer to a wave of intimidation that escalated from street harassment to synagogue firebombings.
For Tehran, it is another sign that exporting terror against Jews abroad now carries escalating diplomatic and legal costs.
