Iran’s top security leadership is increasingly concerned about a renewed wave of nationwide protests, according to a report by Iran International citing sources familiar with a recent high-level meeting.

The Supreme National Security Council convened to assess the internal situation after intelligence agencies warned that public unrest could soon return. Officials reportedly acknowledged that protests are likely inevitable, with uncertainty focused only on timing.

According to the report, security agencies are particularly wary of growing public anger fueled by deepening economic strain, including rising prices, unemployment, and the shutdown of key industrial sectors. Internet disruptions have also compounded the situation, further impacting economic activity.

The agencies are said to have also presented a bleak assessment of Iran’s economic outlook, warning that the country may struggle to withstand prolonged pressure from the ongoing U.S. naval blockade.

Officials also raised concerns about the possible reemergence of opposition figure Prince Reza Pahlavi and the mobilization of his supporters, viewing it as a potential catalyst for renewed demonstrations.

The warnings come against the backdrop of previous nationwide protests that began in late December 2025 in Tehran before rapidly spreading to major cities and smaller towns across the country, drawing massive crowds and reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the regime.

The unrest escalated quickly, culminating in some of the largest demonstrations seen in years before being met with a sweeping crackdown. The violence turned deadly, with the regime estimating around 3,000 fatalities, while opposition sources have put the toll as high as 40,000.

The latest assessment underscores mounting pressure on the Iranian leadership, as economic strain deepens and fears of renewed unrest grow, with ongoing military pressure and stalled ceasefire efforts heightening the risk of further escalation.
