Yom Hazikaron begins at 8 p.m. Monday with a nationwide, one-minute siren, followed at 11 a.m. Tuesday by a two-minute siren ahead of memorial ceremonies at Israel’s 52 military cemeteries.
The Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron) siren sounded on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. During the siren, Israelis stop what they are doing and reflect on fallen soldiers, police, and terror victims, 30,646 since the founding of the State of Israel.
On Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day), the names of 30,646 Israeli security forces and terror victims who lost their lives since the founding of the State of Israel are displayed at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem.
The prime minister also stressed the importance of bringing home the bodies IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, and captives Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, held by Hamas.
While all of Israel will commemorate the Jewish State's Memorial Day beginning this evening, family members of fallen IDF soldiers mark the solemn day in their own way thanks to an Israeli NGO.
The ceremony included clips about those who fell in Israel’s wars and in terror attacks, with an emphasis on lone soldiers from countries in the Diaspora.
Israel came to a standstill on Wednesday to mark Yom Hazikaron, its national Memorial Day, and to commemorate the 23,477 fallen IDF soldiers and victims of terrorist attacks who have died over the course of the last 150 years.
Since Israel was founded in 1948, numerous wars have taken a heavy toll on its small population. With a mandatory draft, most Israelis have lost someone on the battlefield.
