At a Memorial Day ceremony at Mossad headquarters, Director David Barnea sparked curiosity when he referenced the death of a Mossad operative, saying the agent had played a key role in operations tied to Israel’s campaign against Iran.
Barnea said his “thoughts and heart were filled with pride” when reflecting on the operative, identified only as “M,” who was killed outside Israel while carrying out his mission.
He noted that the operations led by “M” combined “creativity, ingenuity, and cutting-edge technology,” and had “a significant impact on the success of the campaign against Iran.”
According to details that later emerged, “M” was a veteran Mossad operative who served for roughly three decades.
He was killed in May 2023 when a boat capsized on Italy’s Lake Maggiore during what was later understood to be a gathering of Israeli and Italian intelligence personnel.
The incident, which left four dead, drew attention after reports indicated those on board were involved in a joint effort linked to Iranian weapons activity.
Senior Mossad officials attended his funeral in Israel, wearing hats and face coverings, as is customary in such cases. The ceremony was held as a military funeral in Ashkelon, where Barnea also delivered a eulogy.
“I knew him as a professional of the highest level,” Barnea said at the time. “A gentle, kind person, calm and quiet. I remember his constant smile. He was a man of people, able to connect with anyone, young or old, Israeli or foreign, always with respect.”
Barnea’s remarks at the Memorial Day ceremony highlighted the lasting impact of M’s work, underscoring the role of covert operations and the contributions of intelligence personnel honored as part of Israel’s national day of remembrance.
