An elderly American Jewish man suffering from cancer is being held in an Iranian prison for no good reason. We must help!
Kamran Hekmati, 71, was born in Iran. A resident of Great Neck, N.Y., he traveled to Iran just over a year ago to visit relatives and was immediately detained by authorities who said he was guilty of traveling to Israel in 2012 for his son’s bar mitzvah.
The family is desperately trying to obtain his release.
In a letter to President Donald Trump, Hekmati’s cousin, Shohreh Nowfar, pleaded for his help.
“Act now to secure Kamran’s release,” Nowfar urged.
“Kamran is not only an American citizen; he is a devoted father, husband, brother and cousin,” Nowfar, who serves as the family’s spokesperson, wrote in a letter obtained by the New York Post.
“Today, he is also a cancer patient,” the letter continues. “He is battling bladder cancer without access to the medical care he urgently needs. Every day matters.”
The letter praised Trump’s “strong leadership in bringing more than 100 Americans home since January 2025.”
“Mr. President, we know you have the ability to make this happen. Thank you for your leadership and your commitment to bringing Americans home,” the letter said.
“He deserves the chance to come home, receive treatment, and be reunited with those who love him.”
In a statement to the Post, a U.S. official confirmed that the president “wants all Americans wrongfully and unjustly detained overseas to be brought home,” adding that the Trump administration is “closely tracking U.S. citizens currently detained in Iran and working diligently to secure their release.”
Please write to President Donald Trump, urging him to continue his outstanding record of securing the release of innocent hostages and prisoners.

Dear Mr. President:
As you know, Kamran Hekmati, an elderly U.S. citizen, was wrongfully detained in Iran in May 2025, and his family has appealed to you to secure his release.
Mr. President, you have an outstanding record of securing the release of innocent Americans and other civilians held overseas. Please help secure the freedom of Mr. Hekmati, who is suffering from bladder cancer and urgently needs access to medical care.
As the Talmud famously states, “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”
Hekmati’s family understands all too well the truth of those words. Given his age and serious medical condition, time is of the essence.
I respectfully urge you to make Mr. Hekmati’s release a priority in any discussions with the Iranian government.
Respectfully,
