Gunfire rang out in the nation’s capital Wednesday afternoon when two National Guardsmen were shot just blocks from the White House in Washington, D.C.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, is currently in custody. The White House was briefly on lockdown, and flights at Reagan National Airport were temporarily halted.
Lakanwal, an Afghan national, entered the United States in September 2021 under “Operation Allies Welcome” following the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
According to Fox News Digital, Lakanwal had previously worked with various U.S. government entities, including the CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe told Fox News Digital, “In the wake of the disastrous Biden withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Biden administration justified bringing the alleged shooter to the United States due to his prior work with the U.S. government, including CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar, which ended shortly following the chaotic evacuation.”
The attack drew immediate international attention. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar expressed shock and solidarity, tweeting, “Shocked and deeply saddened by the deadly shooting in Washington, D.C., today. My thoughts are with the families of the two brave National Guardsmen that were [initially reported as killed]. We stand in solidarity with the United States, the American people, and @POTUS.”

The two Guardsmen were initially reported as killed, but officials later confirmed they remain in critical condition at separate hospitals. President Trump, speaking from Mar-a-Lago, Florida, reaffirmed their status and praised the National Guard and law enforcement.
On Truth Social, he said, “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, including the motives of Lakanwal, who reportedly sustained injuries during the incident.
