Suspected Iranian drones struck at least three commercial vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz overnight Wednesday, according to a report by CBS News, in the latest attacks targeting the world’s most important oil shipping route.

The incidents come amid mounting concerns that Iran has begun laying naval mines in the strategic waterway, which carries roughly 20 percent of global crude oil shipments.

According to CNN, U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Iranian forces have deployed a limited number of mines in recent days, though the effort remains relatively small so far.

Two sources familiar with the intelligence reporting told CNN that only a few dozen mines have been laid, but Iran still retains 80–90 percent of its fleet of small boats and mine-laying vessels, meaning it could rapidly escalate the operation if it chooses.

President Donald Trump issued a stern warning Tuesday afternoon, demanding that Iran immediately remove any mines placed in the strait.

“If Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed immediately,” Trump wrote on social media.

“If for any reason mines were placed and they are not removed forthwith, the military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before.”

Trump added that U.S. forces would use advanced surveillance and missile systems to destroy any vessels attempting to deploy mines.

“We are using the same technology and missile capabilities deployed against drug traffickers to permanently eliminate any boat or ship attempting to mine the Hormuz Strait,” he wrote. “They will be dealt with quickly and violently. Beware.”

A short time later, the president announced that U.S. forces had already carried out strikes against suspected Iranian vessels involved in mining operations.

“I am pleased to report that within the last few hours, we have hit and completely destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying boats and/or ships, with more to follow,” Trump said.

The latest incidents underscore the growing threat to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between Iran and Oman that remains one of the most strategically vital energy corridors in the world.

Any sustained disruption to shipping through the strait could have significant consequences for global oil markets and international trade.
