Israel recorded a monthly high for organ transplants in January 2026, with 54 procedures carried out on 47 patients nationwide, surpassing the previous record of about 36 transplants in a single month set in 2024.
The transplants were made possible through organ donations received at hospitals across the country, allowing multiple medical teams to operate simultaneously.
Two donations were reported at Hadassah, Rambam, Shaare Zedek, and Beilinson hospitals, while one donation each was recorded at Wolfson, LAGALIL, and Soroka hospitals. The distribution enabled transplant surgeries to be performed at several medical centers during the same period.
According to the data, January saw seven heart transplants, nine lung transplants, nine liver transplants and 21 kidney transplants.
Of the lung procedures, seven involved double lung transplants and two were single-lung transplants. One lung transplant was performed using donor lungs provided from Cyprus.
In addition to organ transplants, the month included a significant number of tissue transplants. A total of 78 corneas were transplanted, along with six heart valves and nine bone and tendon implants. One patient also received skin grafts as part of burn treatment.
Despite the record activity, demand for transplants remains high. About 1,400 patients in Israel are currently on transplant waiting lists. Nearly 1,000 of them are awaiting kidney transplants, with most receiving dialysis treatment.
More than 200 patients are waiting for lung transplants, roughly 130 are awaiting liver transplants and about 100 patients are in need of heart transplants.
Data from 2025 showed 56 patients died while waiting for an organ transplant, a decline from 72 deaths recorded in 2024. The number of new patients added to the waiting list also fell, dropping from 848 in 2024 to 728 in 2025.
During the past year, 131 patients advanced on the waiting list, either because they were registered with the ADI organ donor card or because of organ donations from close family members.
