Iranian officials issued direct threats against President Donald Trump after the U.S. leader warned that any attempt by Tehran to shut down the Strait of Hormuz would trigger devastating American retaliation.
The exchange unfolded against the backdrop of the ongoing regional war between Iran, Israel, and the United States, as Tehran signaled it could block the strategic waterway through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared Monday that it could halt oil shipments through the strait and insisted that Tehran, not Washington, will decide when the war ends.
“It is we who will determine the end of the war,” the IRGC said in a statement, warning that not even “one liter of oil” would be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump responded hours later with a blunt warning on social media, threatening overwhelming military action if Iran attempts to interfere with global shipping.
“If Iran does anything that stops the flow of oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of America TWENTY TIMES HARDER than they have been hit thus far,” Trump wrote.
The president also warned that the United States could strike targets that would cripple the Iranian regime’s ability to rebuild.
“We will take out easily destroyable targets that will make it virtually impossible for Iran to ever be built back as a nation again,” Trump wrote, adding that “Death, Fire, and Fury will reign upon them.”
Trump also framed the warning as a message to countries that rely heavily on the waterway.
“This is a gift from the United States of America to China, and all of those nations that heavily use the Hormuz Strait,” he wrote.
Iranian political figure Ali Larijani responded with a warning directed at Washington, declaring that Iran would not be intimidated by American threats.
“The proud Iranian nation is not afraid of your hollow threats,” Larijani wrote. “Your greatest failure has been your inability to destroy us. Beware that you do not become the ones who disappear.”
The exchange underscores the high stakes surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime choke points.
Any attempt by Iran to close the waterway could disrupt global oil supplies and trigger a far broader confrontation in a war that has already engulfed much of the region.
