Iran escalated tensions Sunday with a blunt ultimatum to Washington, warning that President Donald Trump must choose between “an impossible military operation or a bad deal,” as the standoff over the naval blockade deepens.
The threat came after Trump made clear he is unlikely to accept Tehran’s latest proposal to end the war, casting immediate doubt over any diplomatic progress.
According to multiple reports, the plan, delivered through Pakistani mediation, includes a 14-point framework demanding a full end to the war rather than an extension of the ceasefire. Iran is pushing for a rapid 30-day resolution while insisting on sweeping concessions, including a halt to US and Israeli strikes and the withdrawal of American forces from the region.
In exchange, Tehran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore maritime traffic, while demanding the lifting of the US naval blockade. The proposal also includes calls for sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets, compensation payments, and an end to fighting across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
Trump signaled strong opposition even before reviewing the full details. In a post on Saturday, he wrote: “I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable… they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years.”
His comments align with broader indications from US officials that the proposal falls short of core demands and is unlikely to gain traction in its current form.
With Washington signaling rejection and Tehran issuing threats, the diplomatic track appears to be collapsing. The growing confrontation now points toward a renewed round of fighting, with both sides increasingly preparing for escalation rather than compromise.
