Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center have launched a new international initiative aimed at accelerating progress in the fight against cancer. The partnership, unveiled at a recent event in Washington, D.C., reflects a growing recognition that defeating cancer requires cooperation across borders and institutions.
The collaboration brings together Israel’s top academic and research institution with one of the United States’ leading cancer centers. The Hebrew University, long recognized for its contributions to biomedical research, has partnered with Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a premier, federally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that is involved in cancer treatment, education, and prevention worldwide.
“This collaboration with Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center marks a significant step in our mission to advance global cancer research,” said Professor Eli Pikarsky, dean of Hebrew University’s Faculty of Medicine. “By combining the complementary strengths of our institutions, we are creating a powerful platform for scientific discovery, innovation and training that transcends borders.”
The initiative, which has been more than a year in the making, focuses on two main goals: deepening global cancer research and developing the next generation of researchers. Trainees from both institutions—students, fellows, and young scientists—will work in host labs overseas, guided by experienced mentors. This hands-on international exchange aims to spark innovation and foster long-term scientific collaboration.
Dr. Louis M. Weiner, director of Georgetown’s Lombardi Center, emphasized the shared mission: “The work needed to prevent, treat, and cure the dreaded diseases of cancer crosses international boundaries.”
The project also envisions the creation of a multimillion-dollar endowment to support joint research efforts, trainee exchanges, and academic symposia.
Spearheaded by Dr. Gary Kupfer, a professor at Georgetown with ties to both institutions, the partnership highlights the central role of Israeli research in global health. In a world where scientific cooperation is more vital than ever, this partnership positions Hebrew University at the forefront of international efforts to confront one of humanity’s greatest health challenges. Donate to vital charities that help protect Israeli citizens and inspire millions around the world to support Israel too! Now more than ever, Israel needs your help to fight and win the war -- including on the battlefield of public opinion. Antisemitism, anti-Israel bias and boycotts are out of control. Israel's enemies are inciting terror and violence against innocent Israelis and Jews around the world. Help us fight back!
