Four people trapped in a residential building that sustained a direct Iranian missile strike in Haifa on Sunday were found dead on Monday after overnight rescue efforts, as authorities said the victims likely did not reach shelter in time.
The victims were identified as a couple in their 80s, their son, a man in his 40s, and his partner, a woman in her 30s who was a foreign national.
According to Magen David Adom, the four were located after hours of searches, with two found early in the morning and the remaining two recovered later following prolonged rescue operations.
Home Front Command officials assessed that the victims had not managed to reach a protected space.
They were found at the base of the building near a stairwell, buried under debris that took hours to clear.
A preliminary IDF investigation found that the missile launched from Iran broke apart midair, causing the interceptor to miss.
The penetrating component, which contained the explosive material, struck the building and led to its collapse.
The warhead itself did not detonate, and officials said the damage was caused by structural failure rather than a blast. Those inside a lower-floor shelter were not harmed.
Rescue operations continued through the night and into the morning, with crews using cranes and heavy engineering equipment while working alongside police bomb disposal units.
The teams operated simultaneously to extract victims and neutralize the unexploded warhead.
The strike also caused a fire at the scene and raised concerns about further structural collapse.
Several other people were injured, including an 82-year-old man in serious condition and his wife, who was moderately to lightly wounded. Six additional people were lightly injured.
