Ahmadinejad’s speeches frequently portrayed Israel as a temporary political entity destined to disappear.

Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, one of the Islamic Republic’s most outspoken anti-Israel figures, was reportedly killed overnight during the opening phase of the latest military strikes targeting senior Iranian leadership.
Ahmadinejad, who served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013, became internationally known for his confrontational rhetoric toward Israel and the West, as well as for advancing Iran’s nuclear program during a period of escalating global tensions.
Throughout his presidency, Ahmadinejad repeatedly refused to recognize Israel’s legitimacy and openly supported the Iranian regime’s long-standing position opposing the Jewish state’s existence.
His speeches frequently portrayed Israel as a temporary political entity destined to disappear, language that drew widespread condemnation from Israeli leaders and Western governments.
One of the most controversial moments of his tenure came in 2005, when remarks attributed to him were widely translated as calling for Israel to be “wiped off the map,” sparking global outrage.
Iranian officials and some academic analysts later argued that the original Persian phrasing referenced a prediction about the eventual collapse of a political regime rather than a direct military threat.
Nevertheless, the statement cemented Ahmadinejad’s reputation internationally as a symbol of Iran’s hostility toward Israel.
Beyond rhetoric, Ahmadinejad was a vocal defender of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, insisting the program was intended solely for peaceful purposes while resisting international pressure to halt uranium enrichment.
His government’s nuclear policies led to severe economic sanctions and deepened Iran’s isolation from much of the international community.
Despite political rivalries within Iran’s leadership in later years, Ahmadinejad remained an influential and polarizing figure, continuing to promote hardline positions on regional politics and Israel long after leaving office.
His reported death comes amid a rapidly escalating confrontation between Israel, the United States, and Iran, marking the removal of one of the most recognizable and controversial faces associated with Tehran’s anti-Israel ideology.
