The Israel Defense Forces cleared for publication the name of an IDF soldier who was killed in combat in southern Lebanon.
The fallen soldier was identified as Sgt. Liran Ben Zion, 19, from Holon, a tank crewman in Battalion 9 of the 401st Armored Brigade.
According to details released by the military, Hezbollah terrorists fired an anti-tank missile that directly struck a tank from Battalion 9 operating in the western sector of southern Lebanon. As a result of the strike, Sgt. Ben Zion was killed and another soldier was seriously wounded.
During evacuation efforts to rescue the wounded soldiers, Hezbollah operatives continued firing additional anti-tank missiles in an attempt to hit the rescue forces. No additional casualties were reported among the rescue teams, and the evacuation was completed successfully.
Israeli forces responded with heavy fire and struck dozens of Hezbollah targets in the area. The military said it is still examining whether the cell responsible for firing the missile was eliminated.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement expressing condolences to the family, saying, “Together with all the citizens of Israel, my wife and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Armored Corps soldier Sgt. Liran Ben Zion, who fell in battle in southern Lebanon. Liran fought bravely on the front lines to defend our communities and citizens from the Hezbollah terrorist organization. We embrace Liran’s family and share in their heavy loss. May his memory be blessed.”
The death comes amid ongoing fighting in southern Lebanon, where several IDF soldiers have been killed in recent days. The escalation follows continued rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah on northern Israel since the group joined the war alongside Iran. The fighting continues to take a heavy toll on Israel’s soldiers and families.
