Antisemitic hate crimes in New York City rose 71% in May compared with the same month a year earlier and increased 46% from the preceding three-month average, the New York City Police Department reported.
Jews accounted for 60% of all confirmed hate crime victims despite making up only about 10% of the city’s population, according to New York Police Department data.
The figures highlight the disproportionate share of anti-Jewish incidents among the city’s reported hate crimes.
NYPD statistics showed that Jews were targeted more frequently than all other groups combined during the reporting period.
Police recorded 41 antisemitic hate crimes in May, making anti-Jewish offenses the largest category of hate crimes documented in the city.
By comparison, authorities reported three hate crimes targeting Asians, five targeting Muslims, five based on sexual orientation, one targeting a Hispanic person, one targeting a white person, one based on gender, one targeting an unspecified ethnicity and 10 targeting unspecified religious groups.
The data showed that anti-Jewish incidents accounted for a majority of confirmed hate crimes despite the relatively small size of the Jewish population in New York City.
The increase also reflects broader concerns about antisemitism in the United States. According to the figures cited in the report, assaults against Jews nationwide have reached a 46-year high.
Experts said official statistics may not reflect the full extent of the problem because many incidents are believed to go unreported.
The latest NYPD data showed increases both over the previous three-month period and compared with May 2025, indicating a continuing rise in reported antisemitic incidents.
The figures also demonstrated the gap between anti-Jewish hate crimes and those directed at other demographic and religious groups in the city.
While multiple categories of hate crimes were recorded during the month, antisemitic incidents accounted for the largest share of confirmed cases investigated by police.
