After disappearing for nine days seemingly without a trace, American-Israeli hiker Samuel Vengrinovich was rescued by the inhabitants of a remote village, Jweekly reports.
Vengrinovich, who grew up in California with family in Florida, emigrated to Israel, where he lived for 15 years before settling in India to take a break from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
After becoming a certified breathwork instructor in Goa, Vengrinovich made plans to set up a clinic to treat Israelis suffering from PTSD after the war.
“Everyone has been affected and has been dealing with their own unique pain and trauma from the war,” wrote Vengrinovich’s friend Eliyahu Freidman in his Times of Israel blog. He said his friend observed, “Everyone… look at us. Look at all the Israelis in Koh Phangan.”
He left on June 9 for a two-day hiking trip to Mount Triund.
Vengrinovich left with a Dutch friend and several Indian tourists, who returned without him. The fact that he had left his passport and phone back at the campsite indicated he had intended to return.
It was later discovered that Vengrinovich had gotten lost and fallen off the edge of the mountain.
He suffered from multiple fractures and was forced to live on insects, berries, and grass.
With most of his supplies back at camp and subsisting on meager food after having packed only one day’s worth of supplies, on June 15, Vengrinovich fortunately came across a village hidden in the Himalayas.
His rescuers took care of him, fed him, and treated his injuries.
After having set up a GoFundMe to raise money for search parties to track Vengrinovich down, now that he has been found, his family and friends are raising money to pay for his extensive surgeries.
