Israel is set to significantly upgrade its aerial refueling capabilities, as a new KC-46 “Pegasus” tanker aircraft for the Israeli Air Force has completed its first test flight in the United States and is expected to arrive in Israel next month.

The aircraft is the first of six purchased from Boeing and will be designated “Gideon” in Israeli service. It is slated to gradually replace the aging Boeing 707 “Re’em” refueling planes, some of which have been in operation for nearly 60 years.

According to Israeli defense officials, the new tankers will be fitted with advanced Israeli systems and tailored to the operational requirements of the Air Force. The upgrades are expected to significantly extend the range of Israeli aircraft and enhance the military’s ability to operate across multiple theaters while maintaining air superiority.

The KC-46 is widely regarded as one of the most advanced refueling aircraft in the world. Israel is set to become the third country to operate the platform, following earlier deliveries to the United States and Japan. The initial agreement for four aircraft was signed in 2022, with two additional planes purchased later.

“Signing the contract for the refueling aircraft is a major milestone in strengthening Israel’s long-range capabilities for years to come,” said Ido Nehushtan, former Israeli Air Force commander and president of Boeing Israel. “These advanced tankers will make a significant contribution to the strategic capabilities of the IDF and the Air Force.”

The development comes as Israel moves forward with a broader military buildup. On Sunday, the Defense Ministry approved the acquisition of two new fighter squadrons, including a fourth squadron of F-35 “Adir” stealth jets from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA aircraft from Boeing.

The deals, valued at tens of billions of shekels, include not only the aircraft but also their integration, maintenance systems, spare parts, and long-term logistical support. Officials said the purchases mark the first phase of a sweeping decade-long force buildup plan known as “Shield of Israel,” backed by an estimated budget of 350 billion shekels.

Together, the new tankers and fighter jets are expected to play a central role in shaping Israel’s next phase of military readiness, particularly for long-range missions.
