“Thank you that what I am dealing with now is going to the police station to file a complaint and not being in the tunnels thinking about what I need to eat.”

The car of former Hamas hostage Bar Kupershtein was broken into on Sunday when thieves shattered a window and stole the phone he had left inside.

Kupershtein posted a video on social media shortly after discovering the damage, saying he would rather deal with a minor theft than anything resembling the horrors he faced in captivity.

“To everyone who asked, I woke up this morning, went to the car, and discovered it had been broken into. They smashed the window here and stole the phone from inside,” he said. “But you know what? Everything is fine, thank God. You have to look at the glass half full.”

He added that even this frustrating incident reminds him how far he has come. “Thank you that what I am dealing with now is going to the police station to file a complaint, and not being in the tunnels thinking about what I need to eat now and whether they will bring me food. So thank you that this is what I have to deal with. It is not fun, but it is more interesting. So thank God that this is what I have to deal with.”

Kupershtein’s reaction reflects the mindset he has embraced since his release from Gaza. Before traveling to Washington last month to meet President Donald Trump, he told CNN, “I prefer to take things with humor and laughter, to be happy with my family, and to look forward, not back.”

His resilience is the same spirit that kept him helping others on October 7, 2023, when he stayed at the Nova Music Festival to evacuate wounded partygoers. He had made several rescue runs and was returning yet again to aid more victims when he was shot and kidnapped by Hamas. Despite everything he endured during captivity, he has said he would make the same choice again.
