As New York City braces for a tense mayoral race led by Zohran Mamdani, a decidedly anti-Israel candidate who supports BDS, a report reveals that nearly 600 Israeli-founded companies have generated more than 27,000 jobs in New York City, contributing billions to the local economy.
The survey, based on 2024 data, found that 590 Israeli-founded firms directly employ 27,471 people in New York City, with an average salary of about $160,000 including benefits.
Their operations have produced $8.1 billion in earnings, added $12.4 billion in economic value, and generated $17.9 billion in total output. The report estimated that the firms support more than 50,000 additional jobs through related industries and supply chains.
Across New York State, 648 Israeli-founded companies have created more than 28,000 jobs and indirectly supported another 57,000, the report said.
About 88% of those jobs are concentrated in New York City. Since the alliance’s first study in 2019, 142 new Israeli firms have opened in the city, adding nearly 3,700 jobs.
There are now 20 Israeli “unicorns” — privately held startups valued above $1 billion — based in the city, including 15 that joined in the past six years.
The report defines Israeli-founded companies as those with at least one founder who grew up in Israel.
“The data affirms that Israeli founders continue to be indispensable to New York,” Aaron Kaplowitz, president of the US–Israel Business Alliance, told The New York Post, “In addition to creating local jobs and bringing revenue to communities, Israelis are integral to propelling the state’s innovation economy forward.”
Kaplowitz said Israeli entrepreneurs view New York as the top U.S. destination for global expansion. The alliance commissioned ABLE Operations, an independent analytics firm, to conduct the 18-month study.
A biotech executive quoted in the report warned that Mamdani’s anti-Israel rhetoric could influence investment decisions. “If the head of the city keeps repeating anti-Israel rhetoric, it can definitely have an effect,” he said, adding that such attitudes could drive Israeli firms away and hurt the city’s economy.
