Reports emerging from Gaza claim that Samar Abu Zamer, the widow of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, secretly fled the war-torn enclave and eloped to Turkey, an alleged act that has sparked widespread anger and feelings of betrayal among Gaza’s population.
Initially thought to be in hiding in the underground tunnel networks used by Hamas, Abu Zamer is now said to be living in Turkey with her children after escaping Gaza using forged travel documents.
According to sources cited by Israeli media, her departure involved complex logistical coordination and a level of financial support that is unattainable for ordinary residents trapped under siege.
What has truly ignited public outrage, however, is the claim that Abu Zamer remarried shortly after leaving Gaza.
The union, reportedly arranged by senior Hamas official Fathi Hammad, has been viewed by many in Gaza as a deeply hypocritical move, especially given her late husband’s central role in leading the current war against Israel, which has left thousands dead and displaced.
“She eloped while our daughters bury their children,” said one angry resident in Khan Younis. “It’s not just the escape—it’s the luxury, the safety, the new life. While we suffer, they move on.”
The backlash comes amid growing reports that families of top Hamas leaders fled Gaza early in the conflict. Local sources suggest that several relatives, including those of Yahya and Muhammad Sinwar, crossed the Rafah border using fake passports and diplomatic backchannels.
Israeli defense officials confirmed that both Samar Abu Zamer and Najwa Sinwar, wife of Muhammad Sinwar, left Gaza before their husbands were killed in Israeli airstrikes.
This isn’t the first time Samar Abu Zamer made the news. In a grainy video showing Yahya Sinwar walking through the tunnels followed by his wife and children, some noticed her luxury Hermès Birkin handbag which requires approximately 20 hours of skilled handiwork and usually is on sale for tens of thousands of dollars.
There is ample footage of Gazan civilians complaining about Hamas families hoarding money and practicing extortion on the public, leaving the residents in poverty and without sufficient resources.
