Tomorrow.io, the Israeli-founded weather intelligence firm, has secured $175 million to build and launch a new satellite network aimed at sharply improving real-time tracking of storms and extreme weather around the globe, Times of Israel reports.

The round, led by Stonecourt Capital and HarbourVest, lifts the Boston company’s valuation past $1 billion and brings cumulative fundraising above $500 million.

The money will fund DeepSky, a low Earth orbit system with upgraded sensors designed to keep the atmosphere and oceans under continuous watch.

Founded in 2016 as ClimaCell by Israeli Air Force veterans Shimon Elkabetz, Rei Goffer, and Itai Zlotnik, the company grew out of a frustration with uneven, aging observation infrastructure.

The founders concluded that forecasting models were constrained less by computing power than by thin, inconsistent data coverage, particularly across parts of Africa, India, and the Philippines.

In January, Tomorrow.io said it had completed its first radar satellite constellation after sending 13 satellites into orbit.

The system revisits every point on Earth about once an hour, compared with the three-to-five-hour refresh cycle typical of government systems, and channels the data into AI-based forecasting tools.

NASA and the US Air Force use the technology, along with more than 250 companies and agencies including Uber, Delta, and JetBlue.

The satellites range from shoebox-sized units to devices comparable to a mini fridge, a design the company says lowers costs and speeds deployment compared with traditional car-sized platforms.

Goffer said the aim is to work alongside national weather agencies by supplying denser, faster data.

The need is growing. Natural disasters caused $320 billion in losses in 2024, with weather-related events responsible for 93% of the total.
