Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te declared that Israel’s defense strategy offers a model for his country as it faces growing pressure from China, invoking the biblical story of David and Goliath as a symbol of resilience against authoritarian powers.

Speaking in late October at a dinner hosted by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Taipei, Lai drew parallels between Israel’s determination to defend its sovereignty and Taiwan’s own struggle to maintain its independence.

“The people of Taiwan often look to the example of the Jewish people when facing challenges to our international standing and threats to our sovereignty from China,” he said. “The people of Taiwan have never become discouraged.”

Lai described Israel’s military preparedness as a “valuable model” for Taiwan, arguing that appeasement has never stopped aggression.

“Peace through strength has long been a shared belief among Israeli, American, and Taiwanese societies,” he said, adding that Taiwan must “channel the spirit of David against Goliath in standing up to authoritarian coercion.”

The Taiwanese leader has sought to deepen ties with both Israel and the United States, courting conservative media and officials in Washington to bolster support for Taipei.

Although Israel, like most nations, does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the two countries operate de facto embassies in each other’s capitals and have expanded cooperation in technology and defense.

Lai announced earlier this month the development of a new multi-layered missile defense network called “T-Dome,” inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome system and what he described as President Donald Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense initiative.

He said the project reflected Taiwan’s commitment to deterrence and its belief in collaboration among democratic allies. “I believe that trilateral Taiwan-U.S.-Israel cooperation can help achieve regional peace, stability, and prosperity,” Lai told the audience.

Taiwan’s foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, also expressed confidence in Washington’s ongoing support, saying he did not believe President Trump would “abandon” the island as Beijing intensifies its threats.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taipei’s leadership insists the island is a self-governing democracy. Lai’s remarks signal a continued alignment with Israel’s doctrine of self-defense amid rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
