A 35-year-old Israeli man was murdered and five others were wounded Sunday morning in a multi-scene shooting attack across the eastern Sharon region, authorities said.
The attack unfolded across several locations near the communities of Kochav Yair, Tzur Yitzhak, Tzur Natan, and Sal’it, triggering a large-scale security response and an hours-long manhunt.
According to investigators, the terrorist first opened fire at a gas station near the entrance to Kochav Yair, wounding two civilians. He then continued to Tzur Yitzhak, where two more people were shot and injured.
The attacker later reached Tzur Natan, where he fatally shot a 35-year-old man and wounded another civilian, before reportedly firing toward the security post at nearby Sal’it.
Magen David Adom said the victim was found inside a vehicle in Tzur Natan suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Five additional victims were evacuated to Meir and Beilinson hospitals, including two men in serious condition and three others suffering moderate injuries.
Large numbers of police, military, and emergency personnel rushed to the area as authorities launched a manhunt. Residents in several communities were instructed to remain inside their homes amid fears that additional terrorists could still be operating in the area.
Police later located the suspect’s vehicle and engaged the attacker. The terrorist was shot and killed by security forces near Tzur Yitzhak.
Initial assessments suggested that two terrorists may have carried out the attack and that a second suspect had escaped. However, following a preliminary investigation, security officials now say only one terrorist was involved in the shooting spree and that he was eliminated by security forces.
Police identified the slain terrorist as Omar Yassin, a resident of Tayibe who was reportedly known to law enforcement due to previous criminal activity.
Yassin, an Israeli Arab citizen, carried out the assault using a vehicle with Israeli license plates, allowing him to move between multiple communities and attack sites without immediately attracting suspicion.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a security assessment following the attack and has been receiving ongoing updates from security officials.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who visited the scene, said he could not provide further details about the victim but described the slain man as “a hero of Israel.”
Police Commissioner Daniel Levy later announced that the incident had concluded and emphasized that restoring a sense of security to local residents was now a priority.
“The incident is over. We need to restore security to the residents,” Levy said from the scene, adding that there is currently no indication of any additional suspect involved in the attack.
