What began as criticism of Israeli policy has rapidly evolved into a systematic effort to isolate Zionist identity.

A new anti-Zionist campaign at New York University is raising intense concern among Jewish students and families who see it as a direct assault on the foundations of Jewish campus life.
While framed as a political protest, the effort to “Drop Hillel” represents a significant escalation in the movement to marginalize and isolate Jewish students in the university setting.
The campaign, led by a group calling itself “Jews Against Zionism,” is calling for a total boycott of Hillel International and demanding that NYU sever all ties with the organization.
By targeting Hillel—the most prominent center for Jewish religious, cultural, and social life on campus—organizers are essentially attempting to dismantle the primary support system for the vast majority of Jewish students.
For decades, Hillel has served as a sanctuary for students of all backgrounds to celebrate holidays, attend Shabbat dinners, and find community. Critics of the boycott argue that by attacking Hillel, the campaign isn’t just criticizing a government; it is targeting the Jewish community itself.
Because the overwhelming majority of Jewish students identify with Israel in some capacity, this effort effectively creates a litmus test for their participation in campus life.
This incident at NYU is part of a broader, more aggressive shift taking place at universities nationwide.
What began as criticism of Israeli policy has rapidly evolved into a systematic effort to isolate Zionist identity. This includes organized efforts to de-platform Jewish speakers, boycott Jewish student groups, and exclude those who support the Jewish state from student government and social organizations.
The timing of this movement makes the environment even more volatile. Since the October 7 Hamas attacks, Jewish students have reported a sharp rise in harassment and intimidation. Many have described being pushed out of campus spaces or being forced to denounce their heritage as a condition of being accepted by their peers.
While “Drop Hillel” proponents claim their focus is institutional, the practical impact is the creation of a hostile and exclusionary environment.
By attempting to remove the face of Jewish life from campus, the campaign deepens existing divisions and sends a clear message that Jewish students are no longer welcome to bring their full identities to the university.
As these efforts grow, parents and students are left asking whether universities are still capable of protecting the safety and belonging of their Jewish communities.
