The wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing growing criticism after reports revealed her involvement in anti-Israel political campaigns and the sudden deletion of her social media accounts following the resurfacing of controversial posts.
According to a report in the New York Post, Rama Duwaji, an illustrator and activist, created artwork and promotional material for campaigns run by the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America that targeted pro-Israel organizations and political candidates supportive of Israel.
The campaign promoted political candidates who refused funding from pro-Israel groups and supported legislation aimed at penalizing charities accused of supporting Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria.
Promotional materials and animations encouraged voters to check whether their elected officials supported Israel, called for ending U.S. support for Israel’s military operations, and framed the Gaza war in terms highly critical of Israel.
Reports said Duwaji also produced artwork linking alleged U.S. police violence with Israeli military operations, using imagery associated with resistance movements, which critics say reflects a broader effort to delegitimize Israel and portray it as a criminal state.
The revelations sparked backlash within parts of the Jewish community and among pro-Israel political figures in New York.
Former New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind, founder of Americans Against Antisemitism, sharply criticized the couple, accusing them of promoting extreme anti-Israel views and hostility toward the Jewish state.
Over the weekend, additional controversy erupted when Duwaji deleted her X account shortly after screenshots surfaced online showing past posts that allegedly included offensive and racially charged language. Critics said the sudden deletion appeared to be an attempt to erase damaging material as the controversy began to grow.
Users who attempted to access her account reportedly found a blank page, and the move quickly became part of the political controversy itself, with critics arguing that the deletion suggests an attempt to conceal past statements rather than address them.
The controversy is now drawing increased attention to the political positions of the mayor and his inner circle, particularly regarding Israel, antisemitism, and the growing influence of anti-Israel activism within progressive political movements in New York.
The revelations have intensified criticism from pro-Israel groups and Jewish community leaders, who argue that the situation reflects a broader trend of anti-Israel activism entering mainstream political circles in major U.S. cities.
