Palestine Action, founded in 2020, has led a string of direct-action raids targeting Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest defense company, accusing the UK of complicity in Gaza’s “genocide.”

Five jailed Palestine Action members have announced a hunger strike until the British government lifts its terror ban on the group.

The detainees, held on charges of causing £7 million in damage to two aircraft at RAF Brize Norton, announced the move through the campaign Prisoners for Palestine. Their letter to Home Secretary James Cleverly demands an end to “all censorship,” immediate bail, a fair trial, and the de-proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organization.

“This is a historic moment,” Prisoners for Palestine wrote in a statement applauding the hunger strike. “This is a direct result not only of the government’s appalling actions towards the prisoners, but also of its active participation in the genocide in Gaza.”

Authorities say anti-Israel protesters broke into Britain’s largest air base in June, spraying red paint across two Voyager aircraft leased by the RAF. Brize Norton has served as a transport and refueling hub for flights to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, from where daily missions have been dispatched to assist Israel’s aerial reconnaissance over Gaza to help locate the Oct. 7 hostages. Six suspects were arrested at the scene, and another 18 were later detained, although their identities have not been disclosed by authorities.

Palestine Action, founded in 2020, has led a string of direct-action raids targeting Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest defense company, accusing the UK of complicity in Gaza’s “genocide.” In July, the government formally proscribed the group under anti-terror laws, making membership or support punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

The prisoners have chosen to begin their hunger strike on November 2, the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. They also claim that conditions in prison have worsened since the government designated Palestine Action a terrorist organization alongside Hamas and Hezbollah. However, a government spokesman flatly rejected those claims, telling The Telegraph that all prisoners are treated “fairly and equally, regardless of background or circumstances.”
