Synchrony Medical has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market its LibAirty airway clearance system, a wearable device designed to help patients with chronic lung disease manage their symptoms at home.

The technology, developed in collaboration with Sheba Medical Center in Israel, is intended for patients with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis.

By supporting more effective airway clearance, the device aims to reduce infections, slow disease progression, and lessen the need for hospitalization.

Clinical studies conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina and Sheba indicated the LibAirty system was twice as effective as traditional vest-based therapies, and patients reported higher satisfaction using it.

“Receiving FDA clearance for LibAirty is a pivotal moment in our mission to transform respiratory care,” said Anat Shani, chief executive of Synchrony Medical. She added that the company is setting up its U.S. headquarters in Jersey City, New Jersey, and preparing a limited rollout later in 2025.

Unlike conventional treatments that often require intensive training, the LibAirty system combines a patient-guided app with a wearable vest that delivers chest compressions synchronized to breathing.

The system is based on autogenic drainage, a technique used by respiratory therapists to clear mucus from the lungs.

Prof. Eyal Zimlichman of Sheba Medical Center, who also directs its ARC innovation program, described the device as a response to an “unmet need in chronic respiratory care.” He said it reflects the collaboration between clinicians and entrepreneurs working within Sheba’s innovation ecosystem.

With the FDA decision, Synchrony Medical plans to expand its U.S. presence and seek partnerships to make the technology more widely available to patients.
