A large analysis of more than 280,000 patients has found that ongoing financial stress and food insecurity are strongly linked to accelerated biological aging of the heart—sometimes rivaling the effects of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the study reviewed data from patients treated at the Mayo Clinic between 2018 and 2023. As part of routine care, participants completed questionnaires on their living conditions and underwent electrocardiograms (ECGs).

Using artificial intelligence to analyze ECGs, researchers estimated each patient’s “heart age” and compared it with their actual age. Among various medical and social factors assessed, two emerged as the most significant predictors of premature heart aging: financial strain and food insecurity—defined as unreliable access to sufficient, nutritious food.

Dr. Elias Hellou, a senior cardiologist at Emek Medical Center, noted that the findings support growing evidence linking social hardship to cardiovascular health. Prolonged psychological stress, he explained, can biologically age the heart, just as healthy behaviors can slow it down.

The study also tracked participants over a two-year period and found that specific forms of economic hardship—particularly chronic financial strain—were associated with an increased risk of death, even after adjusting for traditional medical risk factors.

Researchers emphasize that future studies will explore whether improving financial stability and access to nutrition can help slow heart aging and improve long-term health outcomes.
