Israeli biotech company PolyPid, based in Petach Tikva, Israel, has announced promisng results from a clinical trial for its new treatment, D-PLEX100. This treatment helps prevent dangerous infections that can sometimes happen after major surgeries, especially abdominal operations with large incisions.
D-PLEX100 is a special antibiotic that is placed directly into the area of the body that is being operated on. It slowly releases the medicine over 30 days, targeting the site where infections are most likely to develop. In a recent study involving about 800 patients, the drug reduced the risk of infection by an impressive 58%.
“This product is now ready for approval and is of interest to potential partners,” PolyPid CEO Dikla Czaczkes Akselbrad said in a press release. She added, “The reduction in the risk of infection after surgery was 58% – a difference that is both clinically and commercially significant.”
Surgical infections can cause serious problems, from pain and disability to long hospital stays and even life-threatening complications. D-PLEX100 aims to reduce these risks and also lower costs for hospitals. It uses a well-known antibiotic but delivers it in an innovative, controlled way that pinpoints vulnerable areas.
PolyPid’s technology is made in Israel, and the company is part of the country’s growing biotech industry. Chief Operating Officer Ori Warshavsky explained why the treatment matters: “Doctors have become accustomed to a certain level of infections… It has been decades since a new technology that truly makes a difference has entered this field until our product arrived.”
PolyPid plans to apply for approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in early 2026 and has already signed a marketing agreement for Europe. With strong support from Israeli investors and a focus on solving a major problem in surgery, PolyPid is showing how Israeli innovation can have a global impact.
