In a historic step for Israel’s foreign relations, President Isaac Herzog on Monday formally received the credentials of Somaliland’s first ambassador to Israel, marking a new chapter in ties between the two countries.
Dr. Mohamed Haji was formally welcomed at a ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, marking a milestone in Israel’s diplomatic ties with the self-declared republic in the Horn of Africa.
Herzog had announced a day earlier that he would receive the credentials of five new ambassadors, highlighting Haji’s appointment as a significant moment in Israel’s foreign relations.
Haji’s accreditation follows Israel’s formal acceptance of his appointment in February 2026, making him the first Somaliland representative to serve as ambassador to Israel.
He has played a central role in advancing ties between the two sides, helping shift the relationship from quiet engagement to a full diplomatic partnership.
The development comes amid rapidly expanding ties between Israel and Somaliland. In December 2025, Israel became the first UN member state to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent country.
Last month, Israel also appointed its first-ever ambassador to Somaliland, naming veteran diplomat Michael Lotem to the post. He is expected to initially serve as a non-resident ambassador as diplomatic relations continue to develop.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi appointed Haji as ambassador with a mandate to deepen cooperation in security, technology, and economic development, as well as to strengthen Somaliland’s international standing.
The exchange of ambassadors marks a new phase in relations between the two countries, reflecting growing strategic cooperation and diplomatic recognition.
