Israel excels in the area of defense yet again and ranks second globally behind the US in the size of drone companies, according to an article published in The Defense Post.
Despite Israel’s relatively small size compared to the world’s other major drone producers, eight of the 100 largest drone companies are based in Israel, with Elbit Systems ranking fifth globally.
The Defense Post based company rankings on factors such as annual revenue, investment in research and development, growth trajectory, and a commitment to forward-looking innovation.
To maintain fairness and transparency, Israeli state-owned or government-controlled entities, such as Israel Aerospace Industries and Rafael, were excluded from the ranking.
Elbit Systems of Israel secured a higher ranking than several major global defense firms, including Italy’s Leonardo, the UK’s BAE Systems, the US’s Lockheed Martin, and Germany’s Rheinmetall.
It’s no wonder that Elbit Systems received such a high ranking. The Hermes 450 and 900 UAVs played an integral role in Operation Rising Lion and dominated Iran’s airspace during the Israeli Air Force’s missions.
The Hermes 900 is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) built for medium-altitude and long-endurance missions and is capable of covering distances of 1,000 kilometers or more. By comparison, the Starliner is a civilian UAV designed to remain airborne for up to 36 hours, reach altitudes of 25,000 feet, and carry up to 450 kilograms of camera and radar equipment.
Other Israeli UAV companies that made the list include Aeronautics, ranked 26th; Percepto, ranked 29th; and UVision, ranked 38th.
UVVision produces both lighter models that soldiers can operate during combat and heavier models that can be launched from platforms.
Xtend, placing 41st, produces drones powered by AI as well as tactical drones. Xtend was awarded an $8.8 million contract with the US Department of Defense.
Other Israeli drone companies placed in the top 100 include Urban Aeronautics (67th), CopterFix Pro (68th), and Colugo Systems (96th).
