Israel’s Defense Ministry has approved the acquisition of two new fighter squadrons, including a fourth squadron of F-35 “Adir” stealth jets from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA aircraft from Boeing.
The deals, valued at tens of billions of shekels, cover not only the aircraft themselves but also their integration, maintenance, spare parts, and long-term logistical support.
According to the ministry, the purchase marks the first step in a broader decade-long force buildup plan known as “Shield of Israel,” with a dedicated budget of approximately 350 billion shekels. The approval comes less than a month after the end of the war with Iran, as the possibility of renewed conflict remains under consideration.
Defense Minister Israel Katz said the recent campaign underscored the central role of air power in Israel’s security.
“Operation ‘Roaring Lion’ once again demonstrated the strength of the Air Force and its decisive role in safeguarding the State of Israel,” Katz said. “The operational lessons from the campaign require us to accelerate force buildup to ensure the Air Force’s superiority for decades to come.”
He added that the procurement of the F-35 and F-15IA squadrons is a “central component” of the Magen Israel plan, aimed at preserving the IDF’s long-term qualitative edge.
Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram emphasized the long-term strategic outlook behind the decision. “We are committed to acting now to ensure the IDF’s military superiority not just today, but a decade from now and beyond,” he said. “The combination of capabilities from the two squadrons will provide the Air Force with full flexibility to respond to a wide range of combat scenarios.”
The move reflects Israel’s effort to expand its aerial capabilities in light of evolving regional threats, with a particular focus on maintaining operational superiority in any future confrontation.
