The Israel Defense Forces cleared for publication Thursday evening the name of an IDF soldier who was killed in combat in southern Lebanon, as fighting continued in the area against Hezbollah operatives.
The fallen soldier was identified as Sgt. Aviad Elchanan Volansky, 21, from Jerusalem, a tank crewman in Battalion 77 of the 7th Armored Brigade, known as the “Sa’ar MiGolan” formation.
Volansky was killed when an anti-tank missile was fired at a tank belonging to a Golani Brigade combat team operating in southern Lebanon. The missile struck the tank during combat operations in the area.
Four additional IDF soldiers were lightly wounded in the incident, including two officers and two soldiers from Battalion 77. The wounded soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment.
Volansky was the son of Brig. Gen. (res.) Yair Volansky, a former commander of the 401st Armored Brigade and former commander of Battalion 77, who currently serves as the defense establishment’s comptroller.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement following Volansky’s death, expressing condolences to the family.
“My wife and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Armored Corps soldier Sgt. Aviad Elchanan Volansky, who fell in battle in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said. “Together with all the citizens of Israel, we embrace his family. Aviad fought with strength and bravery against those who seek our lives.”
Earlier Thursday, the IDF also cleared for publication that Staff Sgt. Ori Greenberg, 21, from Petah Tikva, a fighter in the Golani Brigade reconnaissance unit, was killed during fighting in southern Lebanon after troops came under heavy fire during an operation in a village.
Two additional soldiers were wounded in that incident. Israeli forces returned fire and eliminated several of the terrorists involved.
The deaths come as the IDF intensifies operations in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces are expanding ground and air operations against Hezbollah positions along the border.
The escalation follows relentless rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah on northern Israel since the group joined the war alongside Iran. The attacks have resulted in several deaths and numerous injuries in northern communities, with cities near the border repeatedly coming under fire.
As the war continues, soldiers like Volansky and Greenberg represent the young generation of Israeli fighters sent to defend the country’s borders. Their deaths are a reminder of the heavy price paid by Israel’s soldiers and families in the ongoing effort to protect the people of Israel.
