Greek authorities arrested a 37-year-old Palestinian man in Crete on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack targeting an Israeli-linked cruise ship scheduled to dock on the island this week, according to Cyprus Inform.
The suspect, originally from Gaza, was employed at a hotel in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.
He had previously arrived in Greece and was granted political asylum.
Greek authorities detained him Saturday night following an investigation conducted in coordination with Cypriot intelligence services.
Greek intelligence assessed that the alleged plot was in its preparatory stages.
Investigators believe the suspect was making plans to target an Israeli cruise ship operated by Mano Maritime that is scheduled to arrive in Crete on Tuesday.
During the investigation, authorities searched locations in Crete and Athens.
Police recovered a laptop, mobile phones, bank cards and laboratory equipment, including chemicals and measuring tools that investigators said were intended for bomb-making.
Greek state broadcaster ERT reported that the suspect had previously rented an apartment in central Athens.
The Hellenic Police said the operation was carried out in cooperation with Cypriot intelligence agencies.
Authorities said information obtained from Cyprus led investigators to the suspect after recent arrests there connected to Hamas activity and bomb attacks in Jerusalem.
The operation involved intelligence sharing between EYP and Greece’s Anti-Terrorist Service.
Investigators said the suspect admitted being a member of Hamas and acknowledged contact with individuals recently arrested in Cyprus in terrorism-related cases.
According to the investigation, he is linked to two other Palestinians arrested in Cyprus on suspicion of terrorism-related activity.
Police said the three men were believed to be part of a common operational infrastructure and had received Hamas training together in the handling and use of explosives.
