A Connecticut Catholic school has taken disciplinary action after antisemitic social media posts targeting a rival high school hockey team surfaced ahead of a late-March game, according to a report by The New York Times.
The content included derogatory language and imagery referencing Jews, including one image that read, “Win or lose, we booze, and at least we’re not Jews. Hail Fairfield,” according to the NYT. Another image depicted a New Canaan player wearing a kippah and an Israel jersey, while some posts used the epithet “Jew Canaan.”
The posts were linked to fans of Fairfield College Preparatory School and were directed at the New Canaan Rams before their March 23 matchup, which the Rams won.
In a statement to the NYT, a school spokeswoman said officials were aware of the material and had responded. “We are very aware of the offensive antisemitic comments and posts,” she said.
“Antisemitism is repugnant and antithetical to our values as a school and antithetical to the Jesuit tradition. There have been disciplinary actions that have been taken related to the social media posts.”
The school also notified families about the incident, according to the report, and said the content did not reflect the institution’s values.
The episode comes amid broader concerns about antisemitism in school settings.
Many Jewish high school students say casual antisemitism is common at their schools, and the Anti-Defamation League has documented a rise in reported incidents in K-12 environments in recent years.
The Anti-Defamation League noted that independent schools, which operate under different accountability structures than public schools, may have fewer safeguards in place to address such behavior.
