Boulder Students for Justice in Palestine and the UK-based group Direct Confrontation Media faced widespread criticism after publishing statements praising the terrorist responsible for a deadly attack on a hostage rally in Boulder, Colorado.
The statements were issued on the one-year anniversary of the June 1, 2025, attack on a Run For Their Lives march, a weekly demonstration supporting the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
According to information released by the groups, Boulder SJP described the attack as a “decisive act of resistance” and called for the release of Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who carried out the assault.
The attack targeted participants in the Boulder gathering, where demonstrators were advocating for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
Soliman used Molotov cocktails and a makeshift flamethrower during the assault, burning 29 people and inflicting injuries that later proved fatal for 82-year-old Karen Diamond.
Soliman has since been sentenced to multiple consecutive life sentences without parole.
A version of the statement published on a website associated with Boulder SJP and linked through the group’s social media accounts read: “One year ago today, Mohamed Sabry Soliman took direct action against the Zionist death cult festering in our city. He struck against the colonist procession that gathers weekly to celebrate the pretext for ongoing genocide.”
Direct Confrontation Media, a Leeds, England-based organization, co-published the statement supporting Soliman.
The University of Colorado had previously barred Students for Justice in Palestine from hosting events on campus following earlier violations, according to local reports.
Coverage of the anniversary statements noted that administrators at the University of Colorado Boulder faced limits on potential disciplinary action because the comments were made through private social media channels and were protected by First Amendment considerations.
The Anti-Defamation League condemned the statements.
The controversy emerged on the first anniversary of the Boulder attack, which took place during a Run For Their Lives event supporting Israeli hostages held in Gaza and resulted in one death and multiple injuries.
