Reports from Iran indicate that Israeli drones carried out strikes on security positions and checkpoints across Tehran, triggering exchanges of fire and a series of powerful explosions heard throughout the capital Wednesday night.

According to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, the drone strikes targeted security sites in several parts of the city.

The reported targets included positions used by Iranian security forces and members of the Basij militia, a paramilitary organization that operates under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and is frequently used by the regime to suppress dissent.

Fars reported that approximately 10 security personnel were killed in the attacks.

Iranian opposition sources, however, claimed the toll was significantly higher.

According to those reports, at least 20 Basij members were killed in a strike near Amir Kabir University.

Opposition figures said the street surrounding the university remained closed for hours as authorities worked to clear debris and remove the remains of the damaged positions.

Iranian officials quickly blamed Israel for the operation. One official described the incident as a “terrorist attack,” claiming it was carried out with the cooperation of Israel’s intelligence service, the Mossad, and what he called “monarchist elements,” a reference to supporters of the late shah of Iran.

Authorities in Tehran insisted that the situation in the capital was under control and that security forces had secured the affected areas.

In its coverage, Fars also reported that shortly before the strikes, Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former shah, had urged his supporters to remain in their homes.

While Israel has not confirmed the claims, the allegations fit a pattern of highly sophisticated operations long attributed to Israeli intelligence.

The reports are reminiscent of the 2024 operation in which thousands of handheld pagers and hundreds of walkie-talkies intended for use by Hezbollah exploded simultaneously in two separate incidents across Lebanon and Syria, a strike widely seen as a major blow to the group’s command and coordination systems.
