“All New Yorkers — including Jewish New Yorkers — must feel safe. There is no space or tolerance for hate in our community.”

As Zohran Mamdani, since his November 4 victory in New York City’s mayoral race, prepares to take office in just six weeks, many in the city’s Jewish community remain uneasy, citing his long record of anti-Israel rhetoric and increasingly radical political agenda.

That unease was renewed this weekend after antisemitic graffiti reading “F**k Jews” was found scrawled on a sidewalk in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood.

City Council member Lincoln Restler, who is Jewish, said the vandalism was discovered late Friday night and removed by city workers by Saturday morning.

In a post on X, Restler condemned the incident, noting that antisemitic cases make up the majority of hate crimes in New York City. “All New Yorkers — including Jewish New Yorkers — must feel safe. There is no space or tolerance for hate in our community,” he wrote, vowing to continue fighting antisemitism “in every possible way.”

The graffiti came on the heels of a separate antisemitic incident just hours after Mamdani secured his election victory, when swastikas were spray-painted on a Brooklyn yeshiva. Disturbing surveillance footage shows a bicycle-riding vandal stopping to paint the symbols before fleeing.

Mamdani responded publicly at the time, calling the swastikas a “disgusting” and “heartbreaking” act of antisemitism that has no place in New York.

Following the latest incident in Cobble Hill, the mayor-elect again issued a sharply worded condemnation, writing on X: “Another horrific act of antisemitism on our streets. We cannot stand for this.” He pledged to uphold a zero-tolerance policy toward hate crimes and to increase security support for targeted communities.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also weighed in, describing the graffiti as “a disgusting, cowardly act of antisemitism that has no place in New York. We stand with our Jewish communities today and always.”

The back-to-back incidents—both occurring in the immediate aftermath of Mamdani’s election—come amid a broader rise in antisemitic attacks across the city, deepening concern among Jewish New Yorkers as the mayor-elect prepares to assume control of City Hall.
