Anti-Israel and anti-Trump Republican Rep. Thomas Massie was defeated Tuesday night in a closely watched and deeply contentious Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District.
He lost to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, in what became the most expensive House primary in U.S. history.
Gallrein’s victory, by a margin of nearly ten points, capped a dramatic race that drew national attention and tens of millions of dollars in outside spending.
The contest evolved into a referendum on Massie’s repeated breaks with Republican leadership, his opposition to Israel-related legislation, and his escalating feud with President Trump.
Trump played a central role in the outcome, launching a sustained and unusually personal campaign against Massie in the final days before the vote.
“Third Rate Congressman Thomas Massie, a Weak and Pathetic RINO from the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky… must be thrown out of office, ASAP!” Trump wrote. “He is the Worst ‘Republican’ Congressman in History.”
In another post, Trump intensified the attack. “The worst Congressman in the long and storied history of the Republican Party is Thomas Massie. He is an obstructionist and a fool. Vote him out of office tomorrow, Tuesday. It will be a great day for America!”
Trump repeatedly contrasted Massie with Gallrein, calling the former Navy SEAL a “true America First Patriot” and praising his military background and commitment to Republican priorities.
Massie’s defeat followed years of positioning himself outside the Republican mainstream, particularly on Israel. He was the only Republican to vote against a House resolution affirming Israel’s right to exist and equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism.
He also voted against funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and opposed efforts to condemn the BDS movement. In public statements, Massie called for ending U.S. military aid to Israel and questioned the scale of Israeli military operations in Gaza.
His stance extended beyond votes. Massie boycotted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress, the only Republican to do so, and frequently criticized pro-Israel organizations, including suggesting that lawmakers were being directed by outside groups.
At the same time, Massie openly clashed with Trump. He criticized the president’s foreign policy and accused him of using military action against Iran as a political distraction, remarks that drew sharp backlash from Trump and his allies.
The primary became a focal point for pro-Israel groups and Trump-aligned organizations, which poured millions into the race to unseat the incumbent.
Despite the loss, Massie struck a combative tone in his concession speech, taking a swipe at his opponent and the coalition that backed him.
“Listen, I would have come out sooner but I had to call my opponent and concede, and it took a while to find Ed Gallrein in Tel Aviv,” Massie said.
Gallrein’s victory marks a decisive political setback for Massie and a clear signal of Trump’s continued influence within the Republican Party.
It also highlights the growing importance of pro-Israel positions in GOP primaries, where deviation from party consensus can carry significant political consequences.
