Israel struck Hezbollah command centers in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district on Sunday, carrying out its first major response to renewed Hezbollah rocket fire since the latest ceasefire agreement took effect last week.

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the IDF had been ordered to target terrorist infrastructure in the Lebanese capital following Sunday’s attack on northern Israel.

“In accordance with the instructions of Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz, the IDF is currently striking terrorist headquarters in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut in response to Hezbollah’s fire toward Israeli territory,” the statement said.

The strike marks a significant escalation after Israeli leaders repeatedly warned that any renewed attacks on northern communities would trigger military action in Beirut.

Earlier Sunday, sirens sounded in the Upper Galilee communities of Yiftach and Ramot Naftali after Hezbollah launched two rockets from Lebanon toward Israeli territory. The IDF said both projectiles were intercepted.

The attack was Hezbollah’s first direct rocket fire toward Israeli communities since the renewed ceasefire was announced and its first rocket attack on northern Israel in four days.

Speaking at the start of Sunday’s cabinet meeting, Netanyahu warned that Israel would not tolerate continued attacks from Lebanon.

“We will not allow Hezbollah to fire on our territory or our communities, and we will act accordingly,” he said.

The prime minister also highlighted the IDF’s recent operations against Hezbollah, saying Israeli forces had eliminated hundreds of terrorists, captured the strategic Beaufort Ridge, and uncovered extensive underground infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

The renewed rocket fire comes amid growing questions about the viability of the ceasefire arrangement brokered by President Donald Trump. Since the agreement was announced, Hezbollah has continued launching explosive drones and carrying out attacks against Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon.

More than a dozen Israeli soldiers have been killed in Hezbollah violations since the original ceasefire was declared, including two soldiers over the weekend. Capt. Shahar Gamla died Saturday from wounds sustained in a Hezbollah drone strike, while Sgt. Ohad Yaari was killed in a separate incident in southern Lebanon.

Saudi media reports that Israel informed the Trump administration in advance of the strike.

Sunday’s attack comes just days after President Donald Trump publicly claimed he had secured an understanding under which Hezbollah would halt its attacks and Israel would refrain from striking Beirut.

The issue became a source of tension between Trump and Netanyahu amid U.S. efforts to advance negotiations with Iran, with Tehran warning that Israeli strikes in Lebanon could jeopardize broader diplomatic understandings.

Despite Trump’s announcement, Hezbollah continued launching drones and rockets in the days that followed, culminating in Sunday’s direct rocket fire toward northern Israeli communities and Israel’s subsequent strike on Beirut’s Dahiyeh district.
