“I put it off for a little while, hopefully maybe forever,” Trump said.

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has ordered a halt to a planned U.S. military strike on Iran, citing urgent appeals from key Middle Eastern leaders and ongoing negotiations aimed at reaching a deal.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been asked by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to delay the strike, which had been scheduled for Tuesday.

“Serious negotiations are now taking place,” Trump wrote, adding that a deal could be reached that would be “very acceptable” and ensure “NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS FOR IRAN.”

Speaking to reporters later, Trump said the strike had been postponed for “a short period of time” after regional allies urged him to allow space for talks they believe are nearing a breakthrough.

“I put it off for a little while, hopefully maybe forever,” Trump said. “If we can do that without bombing the hell out of them, I’d be very happy.”

Trump added that Gulf leaders had asked for a delay of “two or three days,” saying they believed they were close to securing an agreement that would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The president said he has instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Daniel Caine, and the U.S. military to stand down for now while remaining prepared to launch a “full, large scale assault” at a moment’s notice if talks collapse.

Iranian officials seized on Trump’s announcement to criticize what they described as inconsistent U.S. policy. Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, mocked the decision in a post on X.

“He issues an ultimatum for a military strike and then cancels it,” Rezaei wrote. “This false hope of subduing the Iranian people will fail. The iron fist of Iran’s powerful armed forces and its great people will force them to retreat.”

The exchange underscores the fragile state of the standoff as diplomatic efforts continue alongside the persistent threat of military escalation.
