A growing international campaign is calling on readers to hold major media outlets accountable following the publication of a highly controversial column in The New York Times titled “The Silence Around Rapes of Palestinians.”
The opinion piece by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof accused Israeli soldiers and prison guards of carrying out systematic sexual abuse against Palestinian detainees, citing interviews with 14 Palestinians.
The column also included allegations of the use of dogs in the alleged assaults, claiming that severe sexual abuse abuse had become “routine operating procedure.”
The article has sparked fierce backlash from Israeli officials and Jewish organizations. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter called the article “one of the worst blood libels ever to appear in modern journalism.”
Supporters behind the initiative argue that media narratives matter. Headlines shape public perception. Repeated distortions, selective framing, and the omission of key facts do not stay confined to newspapers or social media feeds. They influence public discourse, campus climates, political pressure, and even the safety of Jewish communities around the globe.
The campaign states that many people feel they have watched a dangerous pattern emerge over the past several years, particularly following the October 7 attacks and the global wave of antisemitism that followed.
Organizers say this effort is not about silencing criticism or opposing journalism. It is about demanding fairness, consistency, and accountability when reporting on Israel and the Jewish people.
The letter being circulated through this campaign is directed not only to The New York Times but also to influential recipients and public figures involved in shaping media narratives and public discourse.
Supporters are encouraging people around the world to participate by signing and sending the letter directly.
They believe public pressure matters and that large institutions only respond when enough people refuse to stay silent.
