The Dominican Republic on Tuesday designated Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as terrorist organizations, joining a growing number of countries taking action against Iran-backed groups.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomed the move, calling it “another important reinforcement to the international front against terrorism.”

“Congratulations to the President of the Dominican Republic, @luisabinader, on the designation of Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorist organizations,” Sa’ar wrote. “This important decision sends a clear message against the terrorist policies of Iran and its proxies and demonstrates a commitment to regional and global security.”

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, also praised the decision.

“I welcome the Dominican Republic’s decision to designate Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorist organizations,” Danon said. “This is an important decision that aligns with dozens of countries that have already done the right thing.”

“The world increasingly understands that the terror led by Iran is not only a threat to Israel – it is a global threat,” he added.

The move comes amid strengthening ties between Israel and Latin American countries. Earlier this week, President Isaac Herzog concluded an official visit to Central America, where he attended the inauguration of Costa Rican President Laura Fernández Delgado and met with regional leaders.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Herzog also met with several heads of state, including Dominican President Luis Abinader, as well as leaders from Spain, Chile, Honduras, and Guatemala.

“In contrast to many voices on the international stage, a positive trend of change, tightening of ties, and deepening of cooperation with Israel is evident in Latin America,” Herzog said.

The designation by the Dominican Republic is expected to further strengthen that trend, as more countries in the region align with efforts to counter Iran and its global network of proxies.
