High drama unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunfire erupted inside the Washington Hilton while President Donald Trump was on stage, prompting Secret Service agents to rush the president and first lady to safety.
The gunman, identified by U.S. law enforcement sources as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen of California, charged through a main security checkpoint near the ballroom entrance and opened fire. A Secret Service agent was struck in the vest and was reported to be in stable condition.
Shortly after the shooting, Trump posted on Truth Social that it had been “quite an evening in D.C.” and praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for doing “a fantastic job.”
“They acted quickly and bravely,” he wrote, adding that the shooter had been apprehended.
Trump initially said he recommended that organizers “LET THE SHOW GO ON,” but soon posted that law enforcement had requested he leave the premises “consistent with protocol.”
He said the first lady, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Cabinet members were “in perfect condition,” and announced he would address the country from the White House briefing room.
At the press conference, Trump praised the response by the Secret Service and law enforcement, saying agents acted “very quickly” after a man “charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons.”
He said the injured agent was saved by his bulletproof vest and was in “great shape” and “very high spirits.”
Despite the attack, Trump said the event would be rescheduled.
“We’re not going to let anybody take over our society,” he said. “We’re not going to cancel things out.”
On Sunday morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he and his wife were “shocked by the attempted assassination of President Trump last night in Washington, D.C.”
“We are relieved that the President and the First Lady are safe and strong,” Netanyahu wrote, adding that they wished “a full and speedy recovery to the wounded police officer” and saluted the Secret Service for its “swift and decisive action.”
