French counterterrorism authorities have charged two brothers in connection with an alleged plot described as “deadly and antisemitic,” following their arrest during a traffic stop near a prison in northern France, prosecutors said Sunday.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) said the suspects, ages 22 and 20, were stopped last Tuesday, when officers found a semi-automatic firearm, a bottle of acid and an ISIS flag inside their car. The older brother is an engineering student, while the younger is unemployed.

Both men are under investigation for criminal terrorist conspiracy and for possessing a weapon linked to a terrorist plan.

They have been placed in pre-trial detention. Authorities have not released their full identities or specified the intended target of the suspected attack.

Investigators said digital devices belonging to the suspects contained jihadist propaganda, and one of the brothers had filmed a video pledging allegiance to ISIS.

The case emerges as security concerns intensify around Jewish communities internationally. The French Interior Ministry moved earlier this month to bolster protection at Jewish places of worship.

More broadly, officials and advocacy groups report a global uptick in antisemitism alongside increases in Islamophobia and anti-Arab bias since the 2023 Hamas attack and the war in Gaza.

France’s human rights commission, the CNCDH, has said antisemitic incidents in the country frequently rise following Israeli army operations in the Palestinian territories. It reported that such acts reached a record high after the 2023 Hamas attack, before declining by 16% in 2025 compared with the previous year.
