Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, survived the Israeli strike in Tehran that killed his father and several senior figures, according to Iranian sources cited Wednesday, as reports increasingly point to him as the likely successor to lead the Islamic Republic.
According to a Reuters report, two Iranian sources confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei survived the strike that killed his father on Saturday in Tehran.
The attack targeted a compound where the elder Khamenei was meeting with senior advisers and military officials.
In the hours following the strike, some opposition-linked Iranian media outlets reported that Mojtaba had also been killed.
However, Iran’s Mehr news agency later reported that Mojtaba Khamenei was alive, contradicting those claims.
The report said he survived the strike in which Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other relatives were killed, including Mojtaba Khamenei’s wife.
The survival of the 55-year-old cleric has intensified speculation about Iran’s leadership transition following the unprecedented killing of the country’s longtime supreme leader during the opening phase of the U.S.–Israel military campaign against Iran.
Mojtaba Khamenei has emerged as the country’s next supreme leader, according to multiple reports.
Analysts say Mojtaba has long been viewed as a potential successor and has spent years building influence within Iran’s political and security establishment, particularly through ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning about Iran’s next Supreme Leader.
“Any leader appointed by the Iranian terror regime to continue advancing the plan to destroy Israel, threaten the United States and the free world, and oppress the Iranian people will be an unequivocal target for elimination,” Katz said. “It does not matter what his name is or where he hides.”
Katz added that Israel intends to continue its campaign against the regime.
“We will continue to act with full force, together with our American partners, to dismantle the regime’s capabilities and create the conditions for the Iranian people to overthrow it and replace it.”
