Authorities in England are reviewing a reported late-night incident in Staffordshire in which Jewish camp participants were left on a rural road following a dispute with an Uber driver.
The incident, which occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in Staffordshire over a week ago, became public over the weekend.
The passengers were a director at a Bnei Akiva Jewish summer camp and a child attending the camp, who were returning from a nearby hospital when the driver reportedly pulled over on a rural road and ordered them to exit the vehicle.
According to The Jewish Chronicle, the driver initiated a discussion during the ride about religion that later turned to Israel. As the conversation continued, the driver allegedly became agitated and told the two passengers to leave the car, despite the late hour.
They were left on the roadside but were able to return safely to the camp with the help of other staff members.
Camp leadership later informed parents that they were coordinating closely with their security provider, the Community Security Trust, and local authorities to assess the incident and strengthen safety measures.
“The safety and well-being of our participants remain our top priority, and we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness,” the camp said in its message.
Staffordshire Police confirmed it received a report the same day, stating that a taxi driver had asked a man and a child to leave the vehicle following a conversation about religion. Police said inquiries are ongoing and noted that the driver allegedly became aggressive during the exchange.
The Community Security Trust said it has been providing security advice to the camp and is in close contact with police, adding that it would formally raise the matter with Uber.
An Uber spokesperson said the company is aware of the allegations and has opened an urgent investigation. “What has been described is completely unacceptable, and our dedicated team is investigating this matter as a priority,” the spokesperson said.
The incident comes as Jewish organizations worldwide report a rise in antisemitic incidents, with disputes over Israel increasingly spilling into everyday interactions and public services.
