Pro-Palestinian climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested Tuesday in London during a demonstration in support of hunger-striking members of Palestine Action, an organization that Britain has officially designated as a terrorist group.
Thunberg was detained under the Terrorism Act during a protest titled “Prisoners for Palestine,” held outside the London offices of insurance company Aspen.
Palestine Action, an anti-Israel group founded in 2020, was formally proscribed by the British government in July following a series of violent actions.
The designation came after its activists broke into the Royal Air Force base at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, sprayed paint on two military refueling aircraft, and damaged them with metal bars.
Video and photos from the protest showed Thunberg holding signs reading, “I support the Palestine Action prisoners” and “I oppose genocide.”
The City of London Police confirmed that a 22-year-old woman was arrested for displaying a placard in support of a proscribed organization, in violation of Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000. Police later confirmed the woman was Greta Thunberg.
In a statement, police said two individuals were initially arrested for throwing red paint on a building near the protest site. “A short time later, a 22-year-old woman attended the scene and was arrested for displaying an item — in this case, a placard — in support of a proscribed organisation,” the spokesperson said.
Thunberg was later released on bail and is required to return to court in March.
