Anti-Israel demonstrations disrupted Jewish Chanukah events in Amsterdam on Sunday as antisemitic hostility spilled into public spaces and forced heavy police intervention near a major cultural venue. The unrest came amid heightened global concern for Jewish security, just hours after a deadly antisemitic terror attack in Sydney, Australia.
In Amsterdam, protesters gathered near Chanukah concerts attended by members of the Jewish community, targeting events connected to Israel Defense Forces chief military cantor Shai Abramson. While authorities initially permitted demonstrations under restrictions, Jewish attendees reported a tense and threatening atmosphere that required police protection for families arriving to celebrate the holiday.

The protests followed weeks of controversy surrounding the concerts. Earlier, the venue had canceled a Chanukah performance over the singer’s affiliation with the IDF, sparking accusations of discrimination and violations of religious freedom. Although a limited compromise allowed some events to proceed, the protests underscored how openly Jewish religious life linked to Israel is now being challenged.
The Amsterdam disturbances occurred just hours after the horrific Chanukah massacre in Sydney, where 16 people were murdered and dozens more wounded in an antisemitic terror attack. Together, the events highlighted a growing global pattern in which Jewish holidays, synagogues, and cultural gatherings are increasingly targeted for intimidation and violence.
The incidents reflect a broader surge in antisemitism since the October 7 Hamas massacre, with Jewish communities increasingly facing threats and intimidation for openly practicing their faith.
The irony is striking. Chanukah commemorates a moment in Jewish history when attempts to suppress Jewish identity failed, and more than two millennia later, similar efforts are again unfolding during the same holiday. As Jewish communities continue to light the menorah despite hostility, the enduring lesson of Chanukah is once again being tested in real time.
