A Mississippi student accused of hurling antisemitic slurs and throwing coins at Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is receiving thousands of dollars in online donations for his legal expenses.
By Tuesday, a GiveSendGo campaign had collected nearly $29,000 from more than 900 contributors on behalf of Patrick McClintock, who was arrested by Starkville police for disturbing the peace after confronting Portnoy during a downtown video shoot.
The online fundraiser framed McClintock’s case as a battle over free expression and used language steeped in antisemitic conspiracy theories.
Posts on the page claimed that the support for McClintock was a stand against what organizers called Jewish “tyranny,” and portrayed him as a victim of a system manipulated for Jewish benefit.
One message said, “This is peak smallhat fragility– turn any insult into ‘hate speech,’ cry victim, and watch the goyim get locked up.” Another insisted, “This is ZOG in action – and Patrick is the scapegoat.”
Video published by Barstool Sports shows a man identified as McClintock approaching Portnoy and shouting, “Hey fk the Jews, fk you Dave Portnoy… f**k you, get out of Starkville,” before throwing coins in his direction.
The gesture echoed classic antisemitic stereotypes and appeared to mimic earlier incidents involving Portnoy, including a case last year in which a Temple University student was suspended after displaying an anti-Jewish sign at one of his venues.
Portnoy told viewers that bystanders in Starkville immediately pushed back against the harassment, and he voiced appreciation for the support. In a separate video, he described a broader wave of hostility toward Jews, saying that antisemitism is now something he sees “every day.”
Local authorities said the arrest was based on behavior that threatened public order. “Offensive speech may be protected, but actions that risk harm are not,” the Starkville Police Department said, adding that the department’s priority is to ensure all residents and visitors feel safe.
